Background

Stringed instruments similar to the guitar have an extensive history that dates back nearly five thousand years to the lyre, a Mesopotamian instrument. Stringed instruments have had a profound effect on music culture worldwide, from the harpsichords in Bach's fugues to the Electric guitar of Buddy Holly. Recently however, within the past century, the craft of the luthier, the guitar maker, has become subject to the principles of engineering. Technological innovation has led to renaissance in the crafting of instruments of all types. The guitar company Ovation has begun to use carbon fiber composites to craft their guitars into unique shapes to improve ergonomics and tonal quality. Gibson  has developed guitars with robotic mechanical parts that can automatically tune their instruments.
